I really can't remember much about the time before the coming of the hype. No one does. It's human nature to forget about things that hurt you. Regardless of how long it's really been.

Someone once gave me a cube-puzzle. Put all the same colours on the same face, he said. It's easy. I set out to solve it. Finished the top, bright orange, face. Left the rest untouched. In the course of solving the cube, you've gotta dismantle the faces you've completed and reassemble them later. Was always afraid of doing that. Taking apart your accomplishments, for the pursuit of a greater gain, in the hope that it'll actually work. Because if it doesn't it's a living nightmare that sticks with you for all of time.

All I can remember from that day was shopping at the depot. The unicard system was newly introduced and was the best and most convenient way to shop. Bought some groceries. Bought an orange.

I was sitting in my flat -- I remember it well. Watching the news at 6.

The store shelves were clean by 1840, and they were already stationed in the streets. The rioting started at 2015 and soon thereafter it was pretty clear that things had changed. Society had disrupted its balance, and the inevitable wheels of change had turned.

I ate my orange. It'd be the last orange I'd ever eat.
